Differentiating Moisturizers

Does anyone have any tips on how to remember each type of moisturizer and how they work (emollient, humectant, or occlusive)? And on top of that, does anyone have any tips on how to tell which category a particular moisturizer fits into?

Oily/Resilient

Emollients can soften skin, moisturise, decrease inflammation. Examples: butters, oils, fatty acids (some can also have occlusive properties). Emollients are great for most skin types but some can be comedogenic. I'd normally use products with emollients in my PM routine as they tend to be too oily/rich for day time or hot weather. Occlusives create a physical barrier to prevent water loss and lock in hydration. Examples: petrolatum, silicone, waxes etc. For acne prone skin it is better to avoid occlusives or use them in skincare sparingly as it can block pores and lead to breakouts. Occlusives should also be avoided after applying a retinoid or an exfoliating product. Humectants draw the water from the air to the skin. Examples: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate etc. Humectants are great for everyone! šŸ€

Dry/Resilient

Personally I differentiate moisturizers by texture first then look at the ingredients. Since my skin is acne-prone, I always opt for gels or gel creams that are still hydrating enough for dry skin. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by category tho šŸ˜…

For me, just too easy by look in the ingredients. If the products contain HA, Glycerin, Panthenol, Ceramide it would be humectant, if there is castor oil, sunglower oil, any other oil they will be emollient, if there is dimethicone, and have such a rich white thick cream it would be occlusive
