I use vitamin C and niacinamide to help lighten dark spots but it takes a long time with consistent usages

Yes, sunscreen (and sun protective clothing) will help prevent further skin darkening and prevent more sunspots from forming. With consistent & regular use, it should go back to its original skin tone shade.
To help fade the sunspots, use products that contain brightening ingredients such as alpha arbutin, niacinamide, tranexamic acid and vitamin C. There are quite a few body lotions/creams with those ingredients now, but you can also always use your usual skincare like serums or creams on your hands too.
