Patch testing 101

Hi Picky fam! Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. Just wanted to share here what is patch testing and repeat open application testing. You may also want to bookmark this for future reference. Thanks for reading! https://www.instagram.com/p/CPIYBHnMdH7/?utm_medium=copy_link What is patch testing?⏪ Patch testing is used to identify if a person's rash is due to a contact allergen found in personal care products or other materials. How is patch testing done?⏪ Repeat Open Application Test (ROAT) can be done at home by patients who cannot go to the clinic for patch testing ⏪ How is ROAT done? ⏪ ☑️ If the treated skin continues to look & feel normal by the end of the week of testing, the person is unlikely to have a significant allergy to the substance tested. ☑️ If the individual develops a patch of red skin, dry skin, itching or rash at the site of application, there may be an allergy to the substance or to one of its ingredients. ☑️ A positive reaction may indicate formal patch tests should be done to identify a specific contact allergen. Adverse reactions ⏪ ▪️ May persist for several weeks ▪️ Other adverse events: hyperpigmentation, false negative & false positive results ▪️ These tests may provoke other areas of rashes to recur or to appear for the first time. ▪️ Rarely, sensitization to a new allergen may occur. ▪️ Re-testing may also be required to confirm or clarify a reaction. Consult a board-certified derm before doing these tests. 👩‍⚕️ References: Fitzpatrick's Dermatology 9th Ed. https://dermnetnz.org/topics/open-application-test/ https://dermnetnz.org/topics/patch-tests/

I am guilty of trying products on my skin without knowing if my skin will react badly to it. Patch Testing is really a must to know if a product/ingredient is suitable for our skin. Thank you so much for this! I will take note of this! ☺️🤍

This is so details Thank you ! ✨ I didn't give much attention to this before thinking that its not that important but gotta change my mind set after this. My way of patch test is I only apply the new product at my forehead area to know whether it will causes me acnes or clogged pores.Im no sure if the method is practical to do but it does make myself more confident to apply the new product to my whole face 👉🏻👈🏻

You can apply the product on an area such as hairless side of the forearm, inner bend of the elbow, behind the ear or the side of the neck so that if any rash or redness occurs, it won't be obvious. Thanks for taking the time to read! 😊

Thank you for the discussion, dr. Meg! That's a great reminder to me as well. Honestly, I rarely do patch tests and usually try one new product right away on my face. After the redness happened, I regretted it. 😌

There are times that we cannot predict if we will be allergic or not to the product. Hope your skin was able to recover! 🙏

Thank you for this post! I've heard hair colouring products have to be left 48h, but I'm not sure if I would be able to remove the product after. I don't want to leave a stain on my skin.

Thanks for reading. For the hair color products, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to use them because the stain can be hard to remove 😊
