Physical Exfoliation

Okay so I'm relatively new to skincare. I've heard so may horror stories about St. Ives apricot scrub, so I was just wondering, are all physical exfoliates bad for skin. I have acne and I've been using a garner charcoal scrub. Does this cause microtears? Does it spread bacteria? Do I need to discontinue use? PLEASE HELP!!!!

People tend to rub their skin raw when using physical exfoliants because they enjoy that rubbing/ scraping feel. Just make sure you are SUPER gentle when rubbing it on your skin.

Physical exfoliation is more popular for body than face, the thing is that physical exfoliation for face depends on material used by brands. Some exfoliants has big parts and some are based on powders. Powders are better choice for skin, but you shouldn't use them on acne prone skin since if your acne is active you can make inflammation worse or spread bacteria. Also not every scrub is physical - nowadays lots of brands are going for enzyme scrubs instead. I'm not sure about Garnier, but I would check the ingredients since it might be an enzyme peel

okay so would you suggest getting a chemical exfoiliator for face and I can use this on my body. I feel like there's a lot of fear mongering when it comes to scrubs its hard to separate fact from fiction

Not all physical exfoliants are bad. It's usually ingredients like walnut shells that leave microtears. The one you are using should be fine as it uses charcoal powder and pumice which are finely ground so no rough edges πŸ’–

I love teasing the skin care community about microtears and sunscreen. It’s like my jamπŸ€ͺπŸ•ΊπŸ½πŸ’ƒπŸ». I like the texture of physical scrubs. Very nice but I do it once a week It is based on a person experience but it does not cover everyone. Physical scrub is fine once or twice a week, depending on skin. it get rids of that superficial skin roughness. Very Noice. Some people have really thicc layer of skin that can handle these. Chemical exfolliants does this and also do a majority of other things such as increasing collagen, reducing oil, moisturizing skin etc2, depending on which type of chemical exfoliant you use. Mind you chemical exfolliants is not gentle and still need to be used with care depending on your skin. Have you seen people with chemical burn or contact dermatitis from using super strong chemical exfolliants or using it way to frequent. The product you use is fine for those with oily and resilient skin, the kind of skin that probably can take bar soap to the face and still be fine. If your face feels shiny and dry after using this, it is not definitely not suitable for you (I am speaking from experience) but if it works for your skin, it works! It does beg the question, like what are you looking to solve in your skincare journey. That’s the million dollar question that will hve many people asking or you can always use the search bar in picky. Either or works.
