TO retinoid shelf life

Is the shelf life for TO retinols/retinoids really just 3 months from opening date? I opened mine mid-May and stopped using over the summer as I have been going to the beach, however, I always keep it in the fridge. What are the cons of using after 3 months please? TY! šŸ’•

I tried using after PAO and got contact dermatitis and I kept mine stored in fridge as well So I threw it out
