PIE Scars

Hi there, I'm Bach and I've been dealing with PIE for quite some time now. It all started in October when I started incorporating the higher percentage of AHA BHA peel into my routine. Before, I had been using 2% BHA exfoliant for quite some time. At first couple of weeks, it purged me so much and now I am left with many scars from my purging stage as you can see. I initially thought the acid was being unfriendly to my skin but nothing of the signs of broken skin from exfoliating matched my skin condition. I also tried fixing my skin barrier thinking it was damaged at the time for a month and my scars are still the same. Lately I've been incorporating more soothing products like Cica & Green tea but they haven't been doing much help. I've become so insecured about my scars. Relatives would tell me that I am using the wrong products or that I spent so much money and no progress is shown. These words have discouraged me so much; I'm nearly desperate at this point. Currently I still want to try different methods to see which helps but I am anxious if they won't help with my skin condition as treatment for PIE skin is still so limited. Below are the ingredients I want to give a shot based on my research : 1. Azelaic Acid 2. Vitamin C(Ascorbic Acid) 3. Differin(Adapelene Gel) These 3 are my last resorts. If neither is working, I might get a vascular laser or microneedling from an esthetician. What do you think? I need opinions from this community about what I should do with my skin(Should I save up for products mentioned above or save up for laser treatment?) Please share your thoughts. Your opinion matters💙

Hello 👋🏻 unfortunately, the best treatment for PIE is time and there is unfortunately not much to be done in a non-professional setting. Vitamin c and niacinamide can help, but it will probably take some time before you notice any results as the progress is rather slow 😕 however, if you don’t mind waiting 2-3 months, then an affordable serum with niacinamide or vit c could help 💙 also, azelaic is great for redness and from my personal experience it really worked well for reducing redness, but it worked better on redness not related to PIE and little less effective on the PIE in my case. However, it might be worth a try. I would definitely go for inexpensive products, as you can find affordable serums that work really well. Anyway, i hope it gets better and that you’ll find the right treatment for you🥰

It can sometimes be sensitizing if you have sensitive skin, but usually yes, it’s fine. However, i would probably stick to 10-15% rather than 15-20% range as the higher ones can sting a little bit 🥰 but 10% is great and it has been shown that vit c between 10%-20% works the best, so 10% is this sweet spot to start because it is not overly high but it will also work great 💙 if you’re nervous about 10%, then the Ordinary has a rather gentle 8% ascorbic acid with 2% arbutin that actually helps with hyperpigmentation and while it isn’t proven to work for PIE, it can be useful if combined with vit c😉

Hi there! First of all, I really feel your pain! I had so much acne because of the mandatory mask wearing and it really dropped my self esteem and felt so ugly everyday I would cry. Always remember that you are not alone! Were all here to back you up with suggestions, recommendations and even comforting words! ✨✨✨ Anyway, I had the same problem too and felt like nothing was working so I tried Adapalene. I’m almost on my 2nd month now and I can really see the difference on my skin. Really starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel BUT then again, there’s a catch. The major purge. I purged for 5 weeks and it felt like hell. Although it wasn’t painful cysts, it was normal pimples on my cheeks and it was kinda non stop. Like 2-3 per day. But I told myself that I really have to be 100% consistent otherwise I would never see any results if I stop. Adapalene is great but you really just have to be very consistent and patient. But if you don’t want to consider adapalene, I highly suggest you choose azelaic acid over vitamin c. Although vit c is great, but its really unstable and it goes bad pretty quickly. Azelaic acid is proven to brighten dark spots but it can be a bit tacky! Goodluck on your journey! 💖

Hi! I think you won't loose much from trying azelaic acid specially from the ordinary it's quite affordable, also there is tranexamic acid that works good on scars, but I think you should give your routine some more time to work, it may look a waste but maybe you're just in hurry and didn't give it time. But if nothing works I think a dermatologist is the best solution, if you can handle consulting one then it will be much better. Hope your skin will get better soon, and don't forget we all have bad skin conditions at some point you only need to work on it.

Try incorporating differin, however there might be a purging stage. Retinoids are what help increase skin turnover thus helping with scarring. Also I've heard great things about naturium azelaic acid

You should be very careful while using aha/bha. You should not use it every other day. It will over exfoliate your skin causing you to breakout more. You can use it once a week and only at the night time. If you really need to use it in the day time use a very good sunscreen at the top. Now since you have done so much for your skin , just let it breath for sometime. I know its hard to see yourself like this but trust the process. Take a break. start a whole new routine with the basics! Cleanser (not drying or stripping without actives. Soothing ingredients to focus) Moisturizer (gel type which is soothing and calming) Spf (30 or more) And then gradually use exfoliating bha once a week. Also your diet plays a role. Check if you are lactose intolerant . Better to consult a dermatologist for a fast and good result. Maybe some hormonal imbalance is going on inside your body. You will not regret seeing a derm. They know their job and you will save a lots of money. Trust me, woth good topical products u also need internal balance. :)
