Need acne help!

I am 44 years old and I have acne still. I’ve never found anything that will help it besides daily antibiotics. But I don’t want to take those. What is a good but cheap routine to help me clear up my skin? I don’t want to have acne all my life and I’m entering the dating scene again. Thanks in advance!

Hey! Unfortunately acne isn't affecting only teenagers 😮‍💨 Ingredients that can generally help target acne: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, azelaic acid, sulfur. You can use a gentle cleanser in the morning followed by a moisturiser (great if it's with niacinamide for oilier skin). And then a sunscreen of course, chemical sunscreens are usually better for acne prone. In the evening, I'd recommend double cleansing - you can use micellar water or a cleansing balm followed by a face wash. Then I would suggest using a toner/serum with salicylic acid a few times a week and a moisturiser with ceramides. You should also consider introducing retinoids but don't use them on the nights with salicylic acid. Sometimes a simple consistent routine is all the skin needs to find it's balance. Generally avoid comedogenic ingredients, don't touch your face, wash your towels and linen frequently. You can also use benzoyl peroxide as a spot treatment, particularly for deeper cystic acne when they start appearing.

start slow, with the basics which is in this order: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. do the cleanser and moisturizer 2x daily (morning then night) and reapply the sunscreen every 2-3 hours until sunset. you can just apply sunscreen once in the morning without reapplication if you won't be near that much DIRECT sunlight that day. I really like this Hada Labo foaming cleanser I tagged that is $8-$10 on Amazon. for a moisturizer, this iunik one is my holy grail and is $14-$15 on Amazon. and for sunscreen, this nivea one is super lightweight and lasts a while because you only need 2 pumps for the face for the claimed protection. it's lightweight enough to use for reapplication as well, but if you'd like a sun stick for reapplication on the go, you might like this one from Elizavecca that goes for $10-$12 on Amazon. so those are the basics, but I recommend that after you nail that down, you should start weekly chemical exfoliation, this is what really helped me. Pick a night of the week and stick with it as your exfoliation night. I think you'll like this cheap and large glycolic acid treatment from Neutrogena that I tagged. this should be used on your exfoliation night right after your cleanser, not on damp skin though. after a few months of doing that weekly you can increase to twice weekly if you'd like but you don't have to. once weekly works perfect for me actually! if you can't handle this glycolic acid treatment, I'll just tag this lactic acid one from the Ordinary that's gentler snd still very effective and cheap. after getting used to all that, you can add in serums, ampoules, essences, toners, mists, etc if you want to help your skin a bit more but they aren't completely necessary. a large part of battling acne is also barrier repair, so the purito serum and la roche posay gel I also have tagged can be nice additions if you go through any dry spells or irritation, also, if you decide to integrate something in your routine and are confused about where it goes in your routine you can always make discussions here on Picky to ask, because I know we all start simple and end up making our routines a little more complex! but for now those 3 steps mentioned in the beginning are the core of any routine
