Micellar water vs. Cleanser

I have oily and acne prone skin. I've always used cleansers twice a day (AM/PM), so I decided to test something. Knowing that overwashing may cause an increase in the oil production, I wondered if this could be one of the reasons why my skin is so shiny and greasy-looking just a few hours later. I had just received a witch hazel water from Dickinson's, so I put it to the test. To my surprise, my skin loved it and wasn't as oily and shiny as before, when I used cleansers twice a day. So I got the Bioderma Sebium H2O and the same results were observed. Apparently, I found a good, simple, and effective way to at least control the oiliness, but... Two or three weeks later, I started noticing pimples (small and painless, sometimes 2 or 3 at the same time) on my face, which is kinda odd because my acne only acts up a couple of days before my period, and that wasn't the case. After reading some articles, some said micellar waters are more than safe to use in the mornings, when you don't have a lot to remove (makeup, sunscreen etc.), while others said it will still leave behind residues from your night routine products, meaning they are not good "substitutes" for morning cleansers. So now I'm really confused. What do you think?

Do you rinse the micellar water off after using it on your face? There might be residues on your skin which can contribute to your pimple issue.

No, I don't, even though I have already considered doing it. Should I? I thought they didn't need to be rinsed off. 🥺

I personally stay away from micellar water because for my skin, it isn't effective to just wipe over my skin and it leaves surfactants on skin that can be quite irritating and not meant to stay on skin (rinsing after micellar water would be what I would do). I remember having an itchy bumpy reaction to the famous Caudalie micellar water when I was in high school.

I always use micellar water in the morning. If I double cleanse my skin would be superdry. But I’ve heard that if you have acne prone skin micellar water can cause breakouts

When I am using micellar water, I make sure to go over my whole face twice. Then, follow-up with a water based cleanser. Are you using waterproof makeup? I noticed that micellar water is not as efficient as oil based cleanser for waterproof makeup which ended up clothing pores.

I've only been using it in the mornings instead of using a cleanser. To remove makeup at night, I use a cleansing balm and then a proper cleanser.
