You don't necessarily have to purchase the AB cream to use with retinol. If anything when you buy AB, you're purchasing a luxury skincare product, there's nothing different from that to a mid priced retinol product.
When starting retinol it's good to start low and slow, start by using it every other day, avoid using actives with retinol, use barrier repair products like a heavy duty moisturizers and remember to use SPF everyday.

You definitely don’t have to buy that cream. AB is crazy expensive.
Always use retinol with care! So structure in retinol if you aren’t used to it. Like the first week 1 day /week. Then 2 week for 2 weeks etc . Goal with retinol is to use as many days a week as possible but this depends on skin and skin tolerance. Purging is common 1-2 months. Always follow up with a moisturizer, doesn’t have to be AB
If you have sensitive skin you can do sandwich method. moisturizer-serum-moisturizer
