🌱 Brand Story: Skin1004 has been taking the skincare world by storm. I see their products being mentioned every day, and there is a lot of buzz. As a company, their goals are to provide affordable, modern clean beauty with minimal ingredients.
🌱 Claims: Alcohol-free, Paraben-free, Silicone-free, Sulfate-free, Allergen-free, Cruelty-free, Pregnancy-friendly, Non-comedogenic, Eczema-Safe
"A lightweight, oil-based cleanser that gently melts away makeup, dirt, oils and sunscreen without stinging the eye area."
🌱 Key Ingredients: 10,000 PPM of Skin1004’s signature Centella Asiatica extract
🌱 The main cleansing agent is a combination of hydrating oils:
🌱Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil
🌱Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil
🌱Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
🌱Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate and Ethylhexyl Stearate as emulsifiers to wash everything away after dissolving makeup
🌱 Texture: This cleansing oil has a bit of body to it. It won’t immediately escape down your fingers when you dispense it into your hand, thankfully. It hits the sweet spot of thin enough to spread around and get into makeup, while thick enough that you feel you can move it around and work with it. When mixed with water, it dissolves into a milky liquid that washes away.
🌱 Scent: A fresh lemony-herbal scent which comes from small amounts of natural and synthetic compounds. It’s quite faint. This product is not fragrance-free, but a cleansing oil will be washed off almost immediately. The main issue with fragrances is if they are left on the skin, causing reaction.
🌱 Price: Comes in 30mL and 200mL size (photos show 30mL)
$7.50CA for 30mL ($0.25/mL) or $30.25CA for 200mL ($0.15/mL)
Better to buy the larger size if you like a product!
🌱 Application: There are two ways to use this product. First, as a daily makeup and sunscreen remover. This formula punches way above its weight level. It very easily breaks down waterproof sunscreen, mascara and my toughest liquid lipsticks and concealer. The best part is after you wash it off. My skin neither feels like it has a greasy residue, nor stripped away. They really got the balance right on this one!
This cleansing oil does remove eye makeup gently and effectively, but I wish Skin1004 would remove the Citrus Aurantium Bergamia oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Oil, and the Limonene and Linalool. These are irritants, and if a product is advertised for eyes, it should have as few irritants as possible in the formula.
I believe this formula is good enough that it could truly stand on its own if it was 100% scent-free. It would be more hypoallergenic and safer for eyes.
🌱 Other uses: I love using this on clean skin as part of a targeted blackhead routine. I only use my fingers for facial massage, but you can use a gua sha tool or roller if you like. My stubborn blackheads finally find their way out when I give them the combination of physical massage + oil dissolving the sebum to gently release them.
🌱 Every day: It’s not necessary to double-cleanse every day, but you can if it works for you. This product does have essential oils and synthetic fragrance, so those who are sensitive to fragrance should test it first.
🌱 Notes: This product does not contain any preservatives, so just be aware of the PAO. While I do like using it for facial massage, I would not recommend leaving it on the skin due to the Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate and Ethylhexyl Stearate. It should be washed off after use.
🌱 Packaging: I have a 30mL sample size, which only comes with a flow reducing cap. Watch out on your first use, you really need to shake this stuff out! The full size bottle comes with a spring-loaded pump. I would recommend keeping the transparent bottle out of direct sunlight in order to keep the ingredients as stable as possible since there are no preservatives.
🌱 Accessibility: The hand pump is good for dispensing the product with one hand. The 30mL bottle is ok if you can shake it, but it will NOT dispense the product just by holding it upside down. This with motor issues may have trouble with the sample sized bottle and its flow-reducing cap.
🌱 Sustainability: This product could be refilled if refills were made available. I like that Skin1004 provides an extra large 200mL size so you don’t need to purchase unnecessary bottles and can save on plastic and shipping. The bottle and cap is recyclable once used.
Overall: If you have no issues with lemony scents, this is an excellent formula for the daily removal of makeup and sunscreen. A great addition to a targeted black-head removal routine because it can help dissolve and remove sebaceous plugs without harsh stripping of the skin.
🌱 Although advertised as being safe and non-stinging for eyes, this formula contains two irritating essential oils and two synthetic fragrances that can possibly lead to irritation on sensitive skin. I think this formula would be amazing if it was 100% scent-free.
