if a product is packaged well (opaque packaging, with an airtight pump and cap) it will last a lot longer.
the main killer of retinol is oxygen and UV light, refrigerating is just an extra step.

Coming to learn. I only put vitamin C in fridge. Good to know it is better to put retinol in fridge.

I've not refrigerated the retinol I'm currently using, but the packaging is similar to what @Robynrose was describing.
