Anyone from Canada get charged a customs fee before for a giveaway product?

I won the Benton Guava Toner Face Pad giveaway and I've very surprised to be charged a custom fee. I don't blame Picky or the brand for the customs fee and was just looking over the rules again about it. I participated because I did genuinely want to try the pads, and the value of the toner pads is certainly under the amount than what's typically dinged to be applied for the customs fee. I've ordered from Olive Young before and the custom fees certainly apply if the value of the goods is over $70 USD. But the carrier emailed me that I had to pay $ 25.64 CAD for these pads. The value of this guava pad seems to range from $20 to $50 USD from a quick online check. I'm not sure why a product that is more than obviously under the typical amount is getting charged a customs fee, but I do know I cannot pay for it right now. I have reached out to Picky, but I don't know if they will get back to me in time as the package says it will arrive soon, so if anyone in Canada has been charged a custom fee for a giveaway before what they did and the aftermath for it. (If you are from a different country and like to share you experience I don't mind either).

Hey, I am from Canada and in the same boat. I have been asked for 27 something dollars. I am not too sure what to do next, but this did looked strange to me as well. I will write to picky about it, however if you have any update please do share

Yeah certainly 👌. Idk if we can message each other on this app but I've followed you in case but I'll either make a new post or update on here.

DHL is notorious for high fees and hitting Canadians hard. I got an email for 27.46$ CAD and found the pads for 28$USD.

So it's DHL's fault then 😅 I don't think I had a DHL carrier for anything before so this is my first time with them... I think.

Did you win the giveaway? Maybe it's because you're out of the US

I don't think I've ever been hit with customs from Picky since the parcel usually contains only one item. Even with the multi-item giveaways I don't think they charged me customs. I've also won giveaways from Benton directly and I don't believe I paid any custom fees for them either. It seems like Benton screwed up this time, since they're the ones who ship the products out to the winners. I would probably reject the product since it doesn't seem to be worth it and email Picky explaining the reason why.

Are you also located in Canada? That sounds nice that you don't get customs fee. If we reject the package if it would reflect poorly on our picky account?

as I've said in another similar discussion, in Spain we have customs too and, allegedly, you can pay them beforehand and the cost will not be as high. this "beforehand payment" needs to be an online payment through a link DHL or whatever sends you, where they say you have to pay customs. but I'm not sure about this

Yes, we can self-declare too. But we need to get 2 copies (paper printed) of the way bill with details from DHL, go in person to the correct customs office (not all of them do this type of clearance), wait, go through the questions in person to get it all stamped and done & pay the taxes if there are any left in person there, take the papers back home and scan them & email to DHL. While getting reminder emails every 6 hours from DHL. It can be a long process, during business hours. You need to have a printer, live close to the right customs office, and have the time to do it. I can't afford to miss work for skincare... so it's rare I can self-declare. Funny enough, sometimes customs waves everything.
