Hyram's Selfless Controversy

Is anyone else really bothered by everything surrounding Hyram's skincare launch? The more I think about it the more problematic it is. A. It's not very selfless to play into the "white saviorism" complex when he's said before he's gone on a mission trip and how he regretted it for that reason. But in his launch video all I saw was poor POC being exploited for his own profit. B. There were hardly any firm promises made on how much of the brand's profits will actually go to supporting these causes. No percentages and firm numbers. correct me if I'm wrong on this but I tried to find the answers in the site's FAQ and got no answers. C. His undisclosed relations with The Inkey List for over a year. We don't know how long Hyram has been working with the brand because it was not disclosed (he even launched a Hyram x The Inkey List Changemakers Kit a month ago). If the brand was working with TIL at the same time as he announced Selfless back in March 2020, that means he's made tons of videos without disclosing this relationship. Which he has already done before with brands like YTTP and FAB. D. He launched the Selfless YouTube channel over a year ago for a giveaway and said the channel was going to be a cause to change the world, but never posted about it again until recently to launch his own skincare line. Zero videos since the launch of his giveaway and YouTube channel since that giveaway. That just seems very shady to me that he couldn't even post any videos about environmental causes before this launch because he couldn't be bothered? Am I missing anything else that's off about this launch? Let me know! Edit: someone just pointed out the product that just dropped too. $30 for a simple hydrating retinol serum?

In a video he posted it said that they would give 1% of their profits to environmental causes. I think it’s pretty tacky that he named it “Selfless” when they’re donating such a small amount. he’s making millions of dollars a year off YouTube ads and affiliate links, he could absolutely afford to give 100% of profits to charity, only then would a name as dramatic as “SELFLESS” be appropriate.

most definitely! I didn't even see the 1% but the fact that people are praising him for that when brands do that all of the time and more...

I said that in different topic about him - he's a self-called skincare specialist, he has no training and when I saw people using Nizoral on face because they saw Hyrams video I was shocked - there are better treatments for Malassezia than Nizoral, also majority of people who think they have fungal acne - they usually have other skin problems, not Malassezia. That's why I'm not a fan of him. I haven't seen launch video, but I'll check it. In general, many brands are bit sharing such information - even huge brands aka clients at the agency I work for, sometimes it's hard for us to get information on recycling and other stuff and it's sad since customers nowadays are well informed about everything.

Honestly I don't know him. I know he's kinda famous on YT/IG. if people are excited about his launch good for them but I think it's a cash grab like most of the recent colabs/launches..

Someone posted this article on Reddit which talks about The Inkey List. https://fashionista.com/2018/07/be-for-beauty-cosmetic-skincare-brands According to this article, TIL is like fast fashion, which is far away from being sustainable. I don’t think I can support them or this brand as it seems phony

yeah theyre definitely bad for the environment because they can't sustainably source their ingredients since they're at such low costs. and they don't have 100% recycled packaging.

he should have launch a brand without being so dramatic about the environment and about being “selfless” I would have support it 100% if he would have not made all those claims. he wants to be so different but he is not doing it right
