#2, I’ve used it that way too. Specifically I’ve used this (the Azelaic Acid product below) the same way as recommended by Paula’s Choice. It’s a treatment so it benefits from using it like #2.

2 to me would be the best way to optimize your products. Azelaic Acid is a treatment so it will go before your moisturizer. You can start out slow every 2 to 3 days and then build up from there.

Method #2 is the usual way to apply azelaic acid in a skincare routine but if your skin barrier is compromised (inflamed and/or you’re breaking out), I would recommend Method #1 to avoid irritating your skin further.
